HaruChika: Haruta to Chika wa Seishun Suru [7/10]

Chika Homura begins her high school career with a goal: to develop a “cute girl” persona. After quitting the volleyball team despite her all-star status, Chika decides to join her school’s underrated Wind Instrument Club and play the flute, believing it to be the most delicate and feminine instrument. For the first time in nine years, Chika reunites with her childhood friend and total opposite, Haruta Kamijou. Unfortunately for Chika, Haruta is not fooled by her efforts to become more endearing. But this does not deter Chika, and she develops a crush on the band instructor, Shinjirou Kusakabe—but so does Haruta!

One of the main reasons that made me watch HaruChika was the fact that P.A. Works was doing the animation. P.A. Works is known for many masterpieces like Charlotte, Angel Beats, Hanasaku no Iroha, and even Another. I went into HaruChika expecting the same quality, but all I got was disappointment. The artwork and animation was fine, the big problem was the pace of the show and the plot itself. You’d think the show would be about the Wind Instrument club and their progress, well yes and no. Most of the story is about them recruiting members for the club. And how do they get recruited? Haruta solves mysteries for them. I think whole mystery solving part is a little too much. Like the mystery portion doesn’t seem to fit with the whole Wind Instrument Club thing. Also how is Haruta able to solve these mysteries? He gets like two clues and boom he has an answer. And sure the answer makes sense but it just feels like it needs more substance, the answer is just too easy. The other thing that wasn’t great was the pacing of the anime. Where each episode showcases a new band member, cliché and choppy. I got tired of the love feud between Haruta and Chika VERY quickly. It just didn’t seem serious enough. It’s more of a “Love at first sight” rather than a genuine love for Kusakabe Sensei. Everything felt half baked. BUT there are some good points to the show, like the art work for example. The eye color for the characters are gorgeous and the backgrounds are beautiful. Another plus is fhána performing the opening!!! I’m always a big fan of fhána! XD.
