Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari [Review]

“Souta Tawara is a web designer working in Tokyo. When he visits his family’s Udon place in his hometown Kagawa Prefecture, he discovers a young boy. Upon confronting the boy, Souta soon learns his secret and decides to quit his job in order to take care of the boy, Poco. The daily adventures of the two slowly enfold as Poco energetically navigates his way through Kagawa, the “Udon Kingdom,” along with Souta.” – Myanimelist.net

Somehow this reminds be of Barakamon Because Souta and Handa are almost identical!!! And the “from urban to rural” scenario is quite similar. And both involve warm, heart touching stories about family and friends T^T. If you enjoyed Barakamon then watch this!!

Story:

Souta and Poco’s adventure in Kagawa is a heartfelt journey in which they and many others learn to appreciate the presences of their loved ones. It’s a lot of cheesy family bonding time and I’m a sucker for anime like this T^T. However; as heartfelt as the stories is they all lack impact. The emotional build ups just aren’t there.

Artwork & Animation:

What really makes Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari stand out is its great scenery, all the beach and mountain scenery are marvelous, and I can’t get enough! As for animation…well, that’s a different story. The animation is lacking especially for an anime like this, where nice fluttering hair in the wind or the slight frown you make before you cry. It’s those types of things that when animated fully and correctly, engage the audience and make them feel the emotions! But alas, there is no such animation, just the bare minimum to make sure that nothing looks bad.

Character(s):

The characters of the show are so great! The duo of Souta and Poco especially! To see both of them grow together makes your heart feel warm! Souta returns to Kagawa to visit after a while of living in Tokyo, still trying to sort out his past. As the story moves on he begins to understand what he wants for himself and Poco. Souta matures a lot in just a few episode and it encouraged me, just a little, to start doing things on my own! I think that the characters are what this show is about!

Sound (OST & Voice Acting):

OK, SO I LOVE JAPANESE DIALECTS, SO TO HEAR IT SO MUCH IN AN ANIME JUST MAKES ME SUPER HAPPY. The voice actors did a great job on this one and the atmosphere that they create was very enjoyable! I hope to see more anime use more dialect much like Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari! OP and ED are both fantastic! (I feel like I say that a lot since i just like music in general…..)

Enjoyment:

I truly loved this anime, I just wished the animation and story had a little more impact. I really wanted to cry but it just never came. The material was there but not the presentation.

Overall: score 8/10

Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari has all the elements it needs for a good anime, but it lacks the punch to deliver the big emotional moment. So therefore, I’m going to give it an 8 out of 10.
