Kotoura-san [Review]

“Haruka, a girl who suffers during her childhood due to her ability to read people’s mind, is starting her high-school life in a new school. When she transferred in, she feels that her life will be the same as ever, but then she meets Manabe, a guy who always think about erotic things, and a club consisting of people who aren’t afraid of her ability. With Manabe and her clubmates around, her gloomy life slowly starts to bloom and enjoyable.” -ANN

Discovered this hidden gem while I was browsing my social media, and I have to say it one of saddest and funniest anime I’ve ever seen.

Story:

What’s great about this story is that it’ll tear your heart out with its heart breaking and sad back stories and within two seconds comes back with hilarious comedy to make you laugh while you cry. It’s a lovely slice of life that revolves around Kotoura, her psychic abilities, and the friends she makes in the ESP club. While it may seem a happy type of anime, there is a dark side revolving around some back story of both Kotoura and Yuriko. Which gives it a uniqueness, given the light and fluffy nature of the show.

Artwork & Animation:

Artwork and animation are simple and works for the type of show that Kotoura-san is. The backgrounds are nice and aesthetically pleasing. The art is cute and funny but can get dark and serious when needed.

Character(s):

Everyone got a little bit of something. But a majority of the focus would evidently fall on Kotoura and Yuriko. Yuriko’s backstory shows how much determinism she has, only to give it away for the friendship that she’s found. Kotoura, in a much similar way, grows to become an independent girl and to rely on others when needed. Both combined with the rest of the development makes a very tight knit group that you’ll want to see more of!

Sound (OST & Voice Acting):

The soundtrack, like the artwork, has a light and dark side to it. Both work very well to accompany the dialogue, whether it’s an ESP club meeting or a flashback to Kotoura’s childhood. The opening theme is excellent at showcasing the anime’s fun side, while the ending theme focuses on Kotoura’s development as a character through the season.

Enjoyment:

Every episode had me wanting more and more and before I realized, I had already finished the entire season!

Overall: Score 9

With a great cast of characters, as well as an interesting plot surrounding Kotoura, Kotoura-san is an under appreciated anime that needs to be watched!
