Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e [Review]

“Koudo Ikusei Senior High School is a leading prestigious school with state-of-the-art facilities where nearly 100% of students go on to university or find employment. The students there have the freedom to wear any hairstyle and bring any personal effects they desire. Koudo Ikusei is a paradise-like school, but the truth is that only the most superior of students receive favorable treatment. Ayanokouji Kiyotaka is a student of D-class, which is where the school dumps its “inferior” students in order to ridicule them. For a certain reason, Kiyotaka was careless on his entrance examination and was put in D-class. After meeting Horikita Suzune and Kushida Kikyou, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka’s situation begins to change.” -ANN

Don’t let the synopsis fool you, the story is much darker and intriguing than it sounds. Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e is an underrated anime in all aspects but I hope that it’ll gain popularity soon because I already need another season!!!

Story:

The more I think about it, the more Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e feels like Baka to Test with a dose of darkness and the presence of an actual plot. There is a Class A through D, Akihisa and Ayanokoji are basically twins, sorta makes you think. Jokes aside, this anime is a dark horse this season, for me, it was one of the best. With this being the first season there’s a lot of initial dialogue to establish the setting and the character which makes the beginning a little slow, but when it picks up, you won’t be able to stop watching! The plot is very interesting with the using the point system to buy everyday needs and depending on the performance of your class you can receive more or less point each month. Not to mention the mystery that surrounds Ayanokoji, who has an overpowering character quality. There is a lot of potential here, I’m hoping there’s enough support to give it the opportunity to make it to season 2.

Artwork & Animation:

The artwork and character designs are fantastic. Backgrounds have a great variety and great perspectives of the space. Characters each have their own unique trait and the coloration of the entire show is wonderful. The animation is a lot better than you’d expect it to be. Nice and clean animation from running streams to action scenes, everything feels very polished and clean.

Character(s):

Even at the end of the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions about everyone. Most of them direct at Ayanokoji and Horikita. Ayanokoji is one of those overpowering characters that is not only formidable but also calm and collective in every situation, which saves you from having to yell at the screen. Even with the focus on Ayanokoji and Horikita, the side characters never get lost in the background. Everyone plays a pivotal role in the entirety of the show. It’ll be interesting to see how much character development will be involved in the upcoming season if it ever gets confirmed.

Sound (OST & Voice Acting):

Both opening and themes written by ZAQ are great and give the entire show a good mood to start and end with. The soundtrack has a kick with the intense orchestral sound coming in at major parts in the story.

Enjoyment:

Every episode had me at the edge of my seat at the end, the timing of the plot twist and climax were very well thought out. Kudos to Lerche for stepping up and bringing us a great anime.

Overall: Score 10

As an underrated anime, Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e will most likely go unnoticed, but I’m here as a huge fan and will continue to support this show and I give this a HIGH RECOMMENDATION. Whether a veteran or newcomer, this is a show to look out for, with lots of potential for a season 2, I’m sure it’ll come back in a years time.
