Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san [Review]

“The modern-day vampire comedy centers on high school girl Amano Akari, who was saved from a strange incident by a vampire girl named Sophie Twilight, and has been interested in her ever since. Akari arrives at her house uninvited and the two start to live together. Although a vampire, Sophie never attacks humans, but purchases blood and anime goods via mail and lives a modern life.” -MAL News

Story:

Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san is a very simple CGDCT anime featuring a very eccentric cast. While there isn’t a lot of progress that happens in the show, the events and interactions that the characters have with each other are what make this Tonari no Kyuukestuki-san as interesting as it is.

Artwork & Animation:

The artwork and animation are cute and simple. With the majority of the show either taking place at school or Sophie’s house, the art is limited to watch it can do.

Character(s):

Think you know all there is to vampires? Well, meet Sophie Twilight, the vampire that binge-watching anime, buys figures and her meals (blood) from an online store, and ventures out into the sunlight to get her mangas signed. Vampires are a pretty famous character trope and used quite often in anime but not quite in the way that Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san has. Akari’s obsession with dolls, Hinata’s obsession with Akari, and Eli’s obsession with young maiden blood are some of the things that make this show interesting.

Sound (OST & Voice Acting):

With the aesthetic from Sophie’s mansion, comes a more European soundtrack featuring traditional horns and strings to evoke a Transylvania vibe, because…vampires. There are also typical comedy pieces that bring up the excitement of certain scenes. And lastly there are homey pieces, simple at its core, featuring only one or two instruments, but fits well when the characters are spending time together.

Enjoyment:

This show was definitely a great break from all of the heavy hitting shows that aired the same season (Goblin Slayer, Black Clover, To Aru Majutsu no Index III etc.). Having a show that I can watch casually was great. The show as a whole was very soothing and I’m hoping that it continues!

Overall: Score 8

As a huge fan of CGDCT type of anime, Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san was right up my alley! The cute characters are fantastic and the vibe of the show is very relaxing. Vampires may be more relatable to us than you realize!

Best Girl: Natsuki Hinata

While I enjoy Sophie a lot, Hinata had me laughing the most! Her tough facade to impress Akari always backfires which then puts her a sticky situation gets me every time.
