Murenase! Seton Gakuen [Review]

- Studios: Studio Gokumi
- Source: Manga
- Genres: Comedy, School
- Synopsis: “Seton Academy, a school full of animals where, thanks to population decline, there are fewer humans than any other creature. Mazama Jin, an animal hater and the only human male in his class, falls in love with Hino Hitomi, the only female human, the moment he lays eyes her. However, he soon finds himself entangled with various other creatures after he reluctantly joins the ‘pack’ of Lanka the wolf, the only other member of her pack.”

Story:
Being a human can be tough sometimes: doing things we hate for 40 hours a week, choosing what colored cloth to cover ourselves for the day, and even pushing buttons to express our thoughts about things that we’re obsessed (why does it feel like that last one hit home more than the others?). Anyway being a human is tough but imagine being one of the last two humans and having to attend a school full of other species of animals! Thus begins our wild safari adventure into the world of Murenase! Seton Gakuen. Jin’s daily life at Seton Gakuen is nothing short of chaotic and to be honest, it’s a jungle out there! The story overall is really straight forward, what are Jin and friends up to this episode! It doesn’t get much further than that though there are some overarching storylines, it doesn’t take up a whole lot of time within the length of the anime.
Artwork & Animation:
The best part of about the art and animation of Murenase! Seton Gakuen is the character design of the characters. It’s interesting to see the different designs for the animals in the school, my favorite character design is Mashima Kuroe the Zebra’s!
As the story focuses on its comedy and character interactions, you’ll see a wide range of fun and silly facial expressions paired with simple pattern backgrounds. While it’s not flashy it does create an impact on the scenarios through making for a punchy delivery! While there are physical conflicts in the show, they really only there for more tension than the core of the show.
Character(s):
The show is shines throughout its chaotic nature but with so many elements going at once in the show, there needs to be a standard that the audience can grasp on to. That standard are the characters themselves, as the show establishes each one’s personality fairly soon as they appear in the show. Jin’s hatred yet insightful knowledge to get him through any tough situation, Lanka’s (wolf) urge to spend time with her pack, and Miyubi’s (sloth) tendency to die should anything get even remotely close to her. It’s an interesting cast with all of their quirks and gags and they serve as a good base point for the scenarios that tend to go bananas.
Sound (OST & Voice Acting):
As you can imagine the zoo that is Seton Academy, there’s bound to be animal noises here and there. The main opening is a perfect example of these and pulls in some tribal influence for a more primitive sound! There are one or two tracks were created in a similar fashion. As for the rest of the soundtrack, well it doesn’t stand out as much as it should. It’s the type of soundtrack that you can insert into any comedy/gag anime without missing a beat. It doesn’t fit the mold that the show has created, rather it’s a plain wrapper going covering everything.
Enjoyment:
The story and characters of Murenase! Seton Gakuen is really out there but I can’t deny that it’s so darn entertaining! And as a plus it’s also educational to boot! Did you know that Zebra are actually closer to donkeys that horses? Or that Koalas eat their mom’s….actually I’ll let you find that one out for yourself.
Overall: Score
7
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Two lone humans walk into a school full of animals sound like the beginning of a dad joke but alas…it’s actually an anime! Murenase! Seton Gakuen is about learning the ways of nature and cooking your food even if the rest of the school doesn’t!
Best Girl: MeiMei
WHO DOESN’T LOVE PANDAS?! I just love how Meimei represents one of the most beloved creatures on Planet Earth, from her confidence to your annoying way to get attention from others! It’s absolutely hilarious every time she’s on the screen because you know something is going to go wrong!
