“Unpopular Opinions” Tag!

What’s up anime gang!
Today’s weekend post is a little different from my usual reviews but I thought it’d be a nice change of pace! This is my first time doing an unpopular opinions tag, so let’s see how this goes…! And just to simplify things a bit, I’ll stick strictly to an anime theme!
Big shoutout to Anime as a cup of tea, for the tag! Check out their blog if you haven’t already, it’s full of relaxing and in depth reads!
Popular series I don’t like:
Tokyo Ghoul

Starting off strong huh…Don’t get me wrong I do like Tokyo ghoul’s manga! But the anime just didn’t do the story justice that it so rightly deserves! From what I’ve heard, it’s now considered a gateway anime and EVERYONE is recommending it. Which is understandable when looking at season one, but anything after these either doesn’t follow the manga and it’s just a complete mess. There are plenty of other shows that could be gateway anime…I would not suggest recommending Tokyo Ghoul’s anime…I would recommend the manga though!
Popular movie I like, but everyone seems to hate:
Tenki no Ko

Aka as Weathering with You, for my English title peeps! Ok, no one really HATES this movie but among my immediate circles of friends that watch anime movies, it seems like they prefer Kimi no Na Wa (Your Name) over this one. Personally, I felt that Tenki no Ko took a step beyond where Kimi no Na Wa couldn’t reach in story telling as well as artwork and animation. Makoto Shinkai has such distinct style that it’s enthralling no matter what the story is about but Tenki no Ko brought all of the elements together with such finesse that it had me stunned at the end. I much prefer Tenki no Ko over over Kimi no Na Wa.
Love triangle where the character didn’t end up with the character I wanted:
*THIS IS A SPOILER HEAVY SECTION, PLEASE SKIP IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THESE SHOWS!*
Koi to Uso
This show frustrated me from the beginning and all the way to the end. There were so many questionable actions by Yukari, our main protagonist, from the way he handled his crush to Misaki and his engagement to Ririna. I didn’t find any reason to fall in love with Yukari’s average self but apparently his one or two acts of kindness was enough to win them over even though he would later shatter whatever trust that was built from that “kindness” to rebuild just as easily with a simple apology. Which leads to me to why the decision to love BOTH of the girls because he couldn’t choose between them was a big slap in the face after that entire farce that we had to go through.
Yesterday wo Utatte
Now for Yesterday wo Utatte…which is the exact opposite of Koi to Uso! The Development was there, the conflict was there, hard decisions were made, and the story was developing in a meaningful way! Annnnnnnnnd then Rikuo, after all of those hardships and trials finally gets into a relationship with Shinako…only to break and up have the show end with Rikuo confessing his love for Haru! You can bet I flipped my coffee table!
Popular genre you hardly watch:
Drama

Ok so if you’ve perused my anilist…you’ll find that I have watched quite a bit of drama, but most of those have a combination of genres like supernatural or comedy. And the shows that are mainly drama didn’t rate very well on my list. I think it’s just the fact that drama usually consist of poor communication, where one party doesn’t want to show weakness or has a secret that they have to hide. This needless DRAMA, becomes quite tiring as the story progresses and usually ends up making me feel bad about the situation or the characters so it’s usually not my go to. I’m not about to stress about someone’s life when I’m still stressing about my own LOL.
Popular show or series I can’t get into:
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

I’ve seen so many Jojo references, memes, and aggressive fans that it’s actually deterred me from actually starting the series. From what i hear and see it’s actually a quite compelling show but the pressure from the fans are a lot (my cousin’s are OBSESSED and never stop talking about it…) and with my frantic anime schedule I can always find something to stall me from me from watching it lol! I will watch it before I die though…
Beloved character you don’t like:
Eren Yeagar

Sorry Mikasa, but Eren is just not my cup of tea. To be honest, Eren has qualities for a great main character: he’s brave, strong-willed, ambitious, and has short hair with bangs that stop right above his eye (the most important quality). However; those qualities just tip in the wrong direction, he’s brave but reckless, strong-willed enough to be considered stubborn, and overly ambitious that leads him to make mistakes. I’m strictly referring to Eren in the early stages of enlistment because, and I’m glad to say, Eren’s character development does strides in the later parts of the story! But in the beginning it’s hard to like the guy and to be honest…I REALLY enjoyed that Levi kicking scene (If you know, you know!).
Popular show or movie I have no interest in seeing:
Osomatsu-san

Well I wouldn’t say I have no interest in seeing this (because how can you hate something if you’ve never tried it?) but despite having seen so many trailers, promotional videos, and merchandise for this show…I just can’t bring myself to watch Osomatsu-san. Maybe one of you reader can convince me otherwise? I’m just not interested in the show and it hasn’t showed me enough to change my mind. I’ve seen a lot of my anime friends talking about the show but I haven’t had any intent of starting…
Popular show or movie I prefer over the book:
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

Alright sure if that actually counts as an “unpopular opinion” but I want to talk about it anyway! KonoSuba is undoubtedly funny to its core. The story has a flair that the Isekai genre has never seen before and so it’s not surprising a large number of fans for the series. But the anime brings the comedy of the story to a whole other level with the facial expressions, well animated EXPLOSION scenes, and we can never forget the beautiful STEEEEAAAALLL! scene! That face of satisfaction is something you can get from the show and no where else!
Popular anime I prefer over the manga:
New Game!

I feel like liking any anime over the manga is unpopular lol, but I actually really love both the manga and the anime for New Game! Though I do prefer the anime over the manga the anime captured and expanded what the manga had! The source material being a 4-koma manga meant that the scenes were short and sweet, focused more on the overall idea of the scene rather than the little details. The anime takes those big ideas in the scenes and creates the connect factors that tie them all together into a wonderful and fully animated story!
Nominations:
No pressure at all to do this tag! I just thought it would be fun to see what other people’s “unpopular opinions” were! That was a fun post to make because I had to think real hard about all of the prompts! Well, until next time!

Aw, thank you for the nomination! I haven’t gotten into Jojo either despite all the memes. Not that I think I won’t like it, but like you, always seems like something else gets my attention.

Agreed on Tenki no ko, in that I also preferred it. Like you said, no one really hates it, but I do remember a lot of reviews when it first came out that were calling it things like “underwhelming”, “average”, “disappointing” et cetera. A bit surprising, because in my opinion Kimi no na wa is the more overrated of the two movies, and was overrated prior to Tenki no ko.
I’ve never heard of Osomatsu-san or ever seen anything from it ever, surprised to read that it’s popular haha.

Hi Yomu, thanks for stopping by! I agree 100% that Kimi no Na Wa is overrated. I absolutely loved it and was extremely biased when I first wrote my review, reflecting back there were a few problems with the story that needed to be flushed out. Tenki no Ko in my opinion actually took the story all the way, but to each, their own am I right?
Haha, I keep seeing Osomatsu-san all over Tumblr and Twitter (and I think the 3rd season is ranking pretty well on MAL?) so I just assumed it was popular. Though, I’m still not sure why it is…I guess I’ll just have to bite the bullet and find out!

Haha well that’d be up to you if you want to watch it. I personally have heard so much about Cowboy Bebop but have no interest in watching it, especially now that I feel like it wouldn’t live up to the hype.

I feel like Cowboy Bebop was created for a certain type of audience and those that have already watch it deem it a masterpiece, to the point that others are wary of its actual quality. But I’ll be honest, I am interested in it. Although 60% of the reason being is that there is a Corgi in the show and I LOVE CORGIS, but with my corgi obsession aside…I’ll make sure to post my thoughts on it whenever I get around to watching Cowboy Bebop!

Very interesting post. I haven’t seen all of those, but I’m not interested in seeing Tokyo Ghoul for example. I watched Weathering With You at a bad time since it was just a few months ago how it aged badly with COVID-glasses as well and some of the subplots are more problematic in hindsight. Personally, I thought Your Name was good, yet still overrated and not even close to my favorite Shinkai film.
