First Impression:

The SSSS in SSSS.Dynazenon was enough to get my attention! If you’ve been following TRIGGER and their works you’ll know that they recently came out with SSSS.Gridman, which ended on a wonderful note! So imagine my surprise when SSSS.Dynazenon showed up on the Spring 2021 line up! With little to no information about the showm my curiousity grew each day asking questions like: Is this related to SSSS.Gridman? Is it a sequel or maybe a prequel? Or is this it’s own story and just happen to be in the same universe (kinda like how Final Fantasy games are set up)? Will we find out what exactly the SSSS part stands for? Why do the characters look like reskins?! Well with all of that out of the way…let’s dive in!

Starting off with background because the show opens up to a very photogenic setting. a smaller town with what looks like a downtown area. A perfect size town for a kaiju attack if you ask me! And for those of you who’ve seen SSSS.Gridman, you may be questionable the reality of things…well I’m right there with as there’s nothing concrete that tells us if it’s one or the other!

At first glance, I see a bit of resemblance to the character design from SSSS.Gridman, now I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing. There are two things I was asking myself the entire episode: Are the character designs coincidentally similar because it’s the same team that’s producing the show or is this something that is trying to relate back to SSSS.Gridman (trust me I’m as tired of writing SSSS as you are of reading it LOL)? Is this an alternate reality that parallel with the reality of SSSS.Gridman?

Gauma as the self proclaimed “Monster Tamer” attempts to “capture” the Kaiju that starts rampaging in the middle of town. Unsuccessful, he noticed the glow around the bag on his waist, pulls it out and the whole gang gets swallowed by the mech master hand. That…was a lot to take in! The first episode focuses solely on establishing characters and the setting with little to no explanation on why things happen! The mystery that surround Gauma as well as the personal lives of our main characters Yomogi and Yume are hinted but not fully spelled out. If the story is as good as SSSS.Gridman, we can expect a pretty big reveal at the end of the show, but will it be the same or will it take the ending in a different direction?

Of course, it’s not SSSS anything without a really cool mech! Dynazenon, as it calls itself, is the mech that forcefully pulls Yomogi and friends into its cockpit. I already thought it was cool enough when Dynazenon first appeared but THEN IT TRANFORM INTO A DRAGON AND I LOST MY S***. Everyone knows that the more geometry a Mech has the cooler it is, especially if there’s a nice color scheme but you’re telling me Dynazenon has another form and it’s a DRAGON?! SOLD.

Recommendation:

YES

SSSS.Dynazenon has a mysterious air to it, much more if you’ve already seen SSSS.Gridman. If you haven’t…I don’t think it’ll be that big of an issue. There’s isn’t a solid correlation between the two shows as of yet, just that they happen to involve giant monsters, mechs, and young high schoolers riding them (…why am I getting flashbacks with plug suits?). If you decide to take the dive, it’s going to be a wild ride from start to finish with some good well developed interpersonal relationships and dynamic mech action!
