Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Movie: Hoshi wo Yobu Shoujo [Review]

“In the story, the seasons have changed and it will soon be the second spring. Tatsuya and Miyuki have finished their first year at First Magic High School and are on their spring break. The two go to their villa on the Ogasawara Island archipelago. After only a small moment of peace, a lone young woman named Kokoa appears before them. She has abandoned the Naval base and she tells Tatsuya her one wish.” -ANN

I was fortunate enough to live next to a theatre that was showing this movie! Prior to the show date, I marathon all 26 episodes the day before, and it was worth every second. They also gave away free Mahouka posters, which is always a plus!

Story:

The story takes place a little bit after the end of the first season, and it even opens up with a beach scene! There does seem to be a gap in story development between the first season and the movie. There are appearances of new characters, such as Lina, who seem to have a large role in the story yet no one had any idea who she was. Hopefully, if we do get a season 2, it’ll bridge the gap a bit so that we can appreciate the movie a bit more. The story is very dynamic, but I felt like there a few too many things happening in the movie. There were too many climatic parts in the story, that in turn made the significance of each individual one lower. Regardless the movie is very thrilling and it’s always nice to see Tatsuya show off his over powered abilities.

PSA! There is a hidden scene after the credits, that might lead to another season of Mahouka! Remember to watch all the way to the end!!

*Update*

I did some research after the movie and it turns out the movie is an original story and is separate from Light Novel. And to answer the story gap that I mentioned above, it turns out the first season of the anime was an adaptation of Volumes 1 through 8. Whereas the movie takes place somewhere between 10 and 11. Hopefully, season 2 will get confirmed soon so that we can see at least 9, 10, and 11 animated.

Artwork & Animation:

The artwork and animation for the movie are phenomenal, the artwork is far superior when compared to the anime. The attention to detail such as the detail of the hair of the character, more individual strands, coloration, and such. It may seem insignificant but I’m always about the details in the artwork and the movie does a fantastic job. Animation also very high in quality, the fighting sequences are fluid, fast, and very flashy. Backgrounds were very lovely, again the attention to detail, nothing was amiss.

Character(s):

As mentioned before we get some new characters that look like they have a big role in the bigger plot, but was not showcased in the anime at all. There are a lot of questions about Lina, but I’m assuming that those questions can be answered if one has already read the light novel.

Sound (OST & Voice Acting):

Brand new soundtrack for the movie itself, and it sets the mood for the entire movie. The new ending theme performed by GARNiDELiA is fantastic, as always.

Enjoyment:

It’s great to see the characters again, with a little bit of fan service, as well as great moments for each character, make the movie worthwhile to watch.

Overall: Score 9

With the return of great characters and a certain over powering main character, the movie rekindles the fire that fans felt when the first episode of Mahouka first aired. The quality of the movie far surpasses what was shown in the tv animation. And with the introduction of new characters, and some surprises there’s a high chance that another season is coming!
