Princess Connect Re:Dive is based off of a extremely popular mobile game of the same name. The anime keeps the core elements of the story in the mobile game and gives it a slightly different twist, a side story that is made specifically for an anime format. That being said, the core elements of the show are still prominent and helps ease the audience into the show. Those familiar with the game’s premise will feel right at home and likewise curious viewers will reeled into the elaborate story that the show is comprised of.
Artwork & Animation:
The art and animation is part of the reason why the show is so enjoyable. The wonderful transitions from game sprites to fully animated scenes is an exciting experience for those familiar with the art style! For new fans, the overall art and animation of the show is imppecable. Everything from normal activities like eating and walking to dynamic scenes like fight scenes and magic casting is jaw-dropping. I can only imagine the amount of inbetweens that needed to be drawn to create such fluid animation (psst! You can see some examples from the gifs of best girls below!).
While I am playing the game I haven’t gotten around to actually delving into the character backstories of the main girls Pecorinne, Kokkoro, and Karyl. There’s a hint of their origins but to actually see them get revealed in the anime was a wonderful experience. Introduction and implementation of other characters from the game into the story were seamless and doesn’t feel out of place.
Sound (OST & Voice Acting):
As the original game has a large soundtrack already I’m not surprised that the anime would use some of that material, though not to the extent that they did! The soundtrack pulled core melodies that fans of the game know well (like the menu theme for example) and expanded on it, creating variations and as well as other pieces that complement those core tracks. I love the variations of the opening theme and using it for multiple purposes like dramatic scenes and action sequences. The tune has a nostalgic feeling with the arrangement and instruments create an atmosphere that was unmistakingly Princess Connect. The soundtrack overall is a bigger scale than the game featuring bigger and wider songs to accompany the dynamic that the anime platform offers.
Good game adaptations are hard to come by but when it’s done well, it’s great! Most adaptations like this will stick to the original content and , more likely than not, are ridiculed for missing certain details and losing the effect that the source material had. As both a player of the game and a fan of the anime, I thought that this was a great adaptation. I can understand why others may not like it, as it doesn’t follow the original story and follows a slightly different path, but I don’t see that as a bad thing.
Princess Connect! Re:Dive expands into the anime realm with this fantastic adaptation. A variation of the mobile game’s original story. the anime follows Bishoku-dono guild a group that focuses on eating and discovering new foods! One of the best game adaptations I’ve seen to date!
Best Girl: Karyl
There are a lot of good characters in Princess Connect and that’s one of the reasons why the game is so popular and loved by fans. And I won’t lie, I have a lot of favorites too..but Karyl trumps them all with her tsundere attitude but also endearing personality. There is hardly ever a boring scene with Karyl is on the screen!
Honorable Mention: Pecorinne and Kokkoro
Of course, we can’t forget about the two others that make up the Bishoku-dono guild! Pecorinne and Kokkoro are great characters that you spent a lot of time with both in the game and in the anime. They each have their unique qualities and traits that make them best girl material!
