First Impression:

Now…I know what your thinking…”Kirito, this show is just about boobs and butts!” and you’re right but WITH GREAT COMEDY AND INNOVATIVE CHARACTER TROPES! Don’t know what I’m talking about? Let’s dive in then!

If I had to define a word or phrase to describe the aesthetic of the show it would simply be “ONE HOT MESS”. First off, the character designs are phenomenal! I actually prefer these over the manga, which surprised even me! The MESS part comes with the chaos that inevitable happens in the show but I don’t mean that in a bad way. The character are such natural disasters on their own that it’s hard to predict what will happen next! You have crazy biochemical researchers, obsessive cosplayer, and girl with androphobia (the fear of men) that always ends up passed out with a nose bleed! And that’s just the tip of the iceburg as we’ve only gotten to know three out of the six heroines!

I do want to take a moment and appreciate the composition throughout the show. Most ecchi anime nowadays have a singular focus around fanservice, the more visually appealing the better! But some forget the basics like background art, character development, and simple composition. Megami-ryou no Ryoubo-kun hits the nail on the head and creates a much more well rounded show with attention to detail in even the positioning of the characters. The aerial backgrounds are a nice touch!

Now Frey is an avid cosplayer and you can pretty much see her extremities through slides above. The combination of chibi artwork to retell her story as well as Koushi’s straight man response really made this scene bright and fun. The contrast between the really detail orientated scenes earlier and this one is a nice break point between more serious interactions between the characters and the more silly ones.

Ecchi genre veterans know exactly about the infamous ways of censorships like the rays of light, the thick steam, and even the dark shadows! But have you seen Mr. Fuki Mamoru!? A hilarious play on censorship from the author let the characters take it into their own hands. While Atena is indeed protecting Koushi innocent eyes…Atena is only one person! There is an UNCENSORED version out there for those who are curious and if you don’t know what means…this anime probably isn’t for you!

Recommendation:

YES

Ecchi anime in the last few years have frankly gone a bit stale and flavorless with a strong focus on fan-service but nothing else. Megami-ryou no Ryoubo-kun seems like the show to refresh the genre and show us something quite enjoyable without neglecting things like actual character development and scene compositions. This anime IS INTENDED for an older audience however, an ecchi anime will always be an ecchi anime! If you aren’t comfortable with the numerous occasions of skinship, questionable actions between a male and female, or some panties shots…I would suggest giving this one a pass!
