Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san (First Impression)

I really dig the simplicity of the art and animation. There’s a certain charm to it, in a minimalist sense. The interactions that Honda-san has with the customers at the bookstore is hilarious, awkward, and relatable all at the same time! I’m interested in the other character and as to why they each have their own mask covering their face, except Honda-san cause….well…he’s a skeleton. Or is he? Maybe this entire show is one big metaphor waiting for someone to figure it out.

SSSS. Gridman (First Impression)

SSSS.Gridman reminded me of Ultraman, which was also referenced in the first episode. The whole concept of a humanoid robot fighting Kaiju (Japanese for “Strange monster”. Think of Godzilla and friends). This anime seems to hone in on the kaiju genre, which was made famous through a series of movies (Godzilla, Gamera, Mecha Godzilla etc.) in the 1950s, with these massive monsters terrorizing urban environments in Japan. As a kid I was in love with Kaiju movie, Godzilla 2000 being one of my favorites, so seeing the concept come back in the form of an anime is great! The signature Trigger art and animation style is back and better than ever, as for the story…there’s not enough to go off of yet but let’s just hope it doesn’t end like Darling in the Franxx did.

Toaru Majutsu no Index III (First Impression)

The last season (Toaru Majutsu no Index II) last aired in 2011. The fans of this series have been waiting and, quite literally, begging for the third season. Each year we were denied that a third season would ever come but our pleas have been heard and after a long 7-year wait we finally have our third season! If you haven’t been exposed to the series then it’s a great time to start (of course you should marathon the first two seasons first and maybe Toaru Kagaku no Railgun while you’re at it)! The art and soundtrack bring back that nostalgic feeling, I’m still a little lost on the story but nothing a quick marathon won’t fix.
