Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai (First Impression)

A perfect little sister…becoming famous in an otaku hobby…the story already sounds very familiar. Anyway, while the premise isn’t anything new, the execution of the story is actually quite entertaining. The character themselves, while still cliché, have a freshness (is that a word?) to them because we haven’t seen these types of characters in a while (or that might just be me…). But let’s talk about the artwork. I always talk about derpy faces on some of my reviews of other anime but when I say that, I usually mean there were a few scenes that had it. Well, Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai has a derpy face IN EVERY SCENE. The art is uncomfortably bad and that’s sugar coating it.

Sword Art Online: Alicization (First Impression)

I honestly didn’t think that Sword Art Online would come back after the second season in Gun Gale Online, but man I’m not complaining. Starting off with a 40-minutes episode to start off the new portion of the show was a good idea, allows for an introduction to this new arc as well as some scene to remind the audience on what’s already happened. The art and animation already caught my attention within the first few minutes, ALMOST like something ufotable would’ve done. The coloring and lighting made everything pop and visually stimulating. But las it’s not ufotable and therefore will have some flaws, such as the loss of detail lines in Alice’s hair. On the story side, Alicization brings back the danger and fear of virtual reality, after watching both season 1 and 2 we’ve grown used to the idea of VR and “dying” as a concept. Alicization brings back death in a new frightening way, renewing that tension that we first experience in the first season of SAO.

Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san (First Impression)

I really dig the simplicity of the art and animation. There’s a certain charm to it, in a minimalist sense. The interactions that Honda-san has with the customers at the bookstore is hilarious, awkward, and relatable all at the same time! I’m interested in the other character and as to why they each have their own mask covering their face, except Honda-san cause….well…he’s a skeleton. Or is he? Maybe this entire show is one big metaphor waiting for someone to figure it out.

Toaru Majutsu no Index III (First Impression)

The last season (Toaru Majutsu no Index II) last aired in 2011. The fans of this series have been waiting and, quite literally, begging for the third season. Each year we were denied that a third season would ever come but our pleas have been heard and after a long 7-year wait we finally have our third season! If you haven’t been exposed to the series then it’s a great time to start (of course you should marathon the first two seasons first and maybe Toaru Kagaku no Railgun while you’re at it)! The art and soundtrack bring back that nostalgic feeling, I’m still a little lost on the story but nothing a quick marathon won’t fix.
