KiritoNarukami’s Anime Selection (Winter 2021 Edition)

Hey Anime Gang!

Can you believe that we’re already in the 2021 Winter Season?! It felt like yesterday I was just writing about the 2020 Winter season. It’s been a hectic year, both for the world and anime but I hope you were able to find a silver lining despite that and made the best out of what you had! With that said it looks like the anime industry is getting better as this season is full of anime (there are 27 anime in this post alone!) so we can expect a much higher quality shows in this season as well as in the future.

Oh and as a little update, I’ve officially changed these anime season preview post to read as KiritoNarukami’s Anime Selection to showcase what I’ll be watching during the season (long time readers probably already know lol) so I won’t be covering everything!

Also keep in mind that I will only be making first impressions posts for NEW ANIME! So anything that is a sequel or spinoff will not get a post. The reason for this is to help expose the newer shows so maybe you’ll find something new to watch! It’s also sort of repetitive and full of spoilers (in my opinion) to write first impression for anything past the first season.

With that being said, let’s get into the juicy details!

Awaiting them are the 163 cm hot-blooded captain Shinichirou Oda, the talented and sharp-tongued vice-captain Misao Aoki and his third-year pair, and second-year students, including Akito Kanno, who is always wearing long sleeves due to his allergy to sunlight. The newborn team breaks its former shell of weakness and becomes Fukui’s rising star. This is a certain team’s journey to victory, with a series of fascinating rivals standing in their way.”

-MAL News

With Haikyuu’s fourth season wrapped up, I’m sure there are some of you who are experiencing Volleyball Anime withdrawals just like me! Well fear not as 2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu will fill that hole in your heart! There are a lot of good things going on for the show already: it will be animated by David Productions (Hataraku Saibou and Enen no Shouboutai), it’s based off of a novel so you know that the character development and interpersonal relationships with be interesting and have some depth, as well as a stellar voice cast including: Ono Kensho, Enoki Junya, Umehara Yuuichirou, and Aoi Shouta just to name a few! I imagine, from reading a little more about the show, that it’ll be more drama based rather than action based but I’m excited to see the outcome and where the story will take us! The PV alone showed us the beautiful animation style from David Productions but I’m curious to see how they’ll handle the volleyball movements such as serving, spiking, blocking, setting etc. If you like sports and drama I think this will be a good one to keep an eye on!

2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu will premiere on Jan 8th, 2021

5-toubun no Hanayome ∬

5-toubun no Hanayome ∬

  • Studios: Bibury Animation Studios
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Harem, Comedy, Romance, School, Shounen
  • Synopsis: The second season of 5-toubun no Hanayome

Falling in love with the first season of 5-toubun no Hanayome, of course I’m pumped to finally get to watch the second season! The thing that makes 5-toubun that out from other harem shows is that the heroines are all sisters and quintuplets no less! Each sister has her own quirks and charms but the two things that they have in common is that they’re identical quintuplets and they’re all terrible at studying! 5-toubun is quite slow at first but the story picks up towards the end of the first season which is why this second season is such a highly anticipated show! If you love romantic comedies with a touch of harem, I would definitely give this one a try!

One thing to note though (for fans of the series already) is that there has been a studio change! Tezuka Productions worked diligently to give us season one and has passed the torch over to Bibury Animation Studios (Azur Lane: The Animation) which is quite a new studio as this is only their second TV series but with what we’ve seen on Azur Lane: The Animation, I’m confident that the show will get better with the studio change. Bibury Animation studios seems to excel creating an atmosphere and depth in their artwork so I think it’ll lovely to see how they apply it to 5-toubun no Hanayome ∬!

5-toubun no Hanayome will premiere on Jan 8th, 2021

Alice in Deadly School

Alice in Deadly School

  • Studios: Hoods Entertainment
  • Source: Other
  • Genres: Comedy, School, Shounen
  • Synopsis: “The story begins with the peaceful daily life of schoolgirls—which suddenly breaks down when former schoolmates become zombies. The story follows the actions taken by the girls left behind on the school roof.”

-ANN

Gakkou Gurashi was one of those shows that had my jaw on the floor by the end of the first episode (if you haven’t seen it and are interested I highly recommend watching the first episode with no context, it’s the best way to experience it!) and I get the feeling that Alice in Deadly School will have a somewhat similar effect. Though the universe seem to be much bigger than just this one show. From what I’ve gathered, Hoods Entertainment will be working on two shows this season the other being called Gekidol and both show will reside in the same universe though I think Gekidol is set much after Alice in Deadly School. The idea of running two show simultaneously within a season and within the same universe is extremely appealing! How will the shows interact with each other as we watch the episodes week after week? Will there be connecting factors between the two shows? Will watching one show spoils the contents of the other? There are so many questions and so little answers! This one is a big wild card so for my anime fans that like to go into the deep end, get ready for this show to sink or swim!

Alice in Deadly School will premiere on Jan 4th, 2021

The first episode Alice in Deadly School will be an OVA for Gekidol and the full series will be released alongside the Gekidol Bluray in March 2021.

Beastars 2nd Season

Beastars 2nd Season

  • Studios: Orange
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Slice of Life, Psychological, Drama, Shounen
  • Synopsis: The second season of Beastars

Beastars was quite an unexpected show for me. I’m not a fan of full CGI anime shows as few have piqued my interest. Beastars didn’t either, at first, but then I was persuaded by a friend to binge it and it’s a really intriguing story with a lot of dynamic characters development. Beastars showcases a good way to go about anime with purely CGI. The second half of the story gets a bit dicey for our characters and I imagine this new season will escalate everything! There are a bit of questionable elements within Beastars so it’s not something that everyone can get into, but if you can, it’s quite a dramatic adventure.

Beastars 2nd Season will premiere on Jan 5th, 2021

Bungou Stray Dogs Wan!

Bungou Stray Dogs Wan!

  • Studios: Bones, Nomad
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Supernatural
  • Synopsis: “The peaceful days of the very popular work Bungou Stray Dogs are here. The characters of the Armed Detective Agency and the Mafia are in miniature form?! Due to Atsushi and co. becoming cute, this is a different experience to the original work—a pleasant gag manga!

-Bungou Stray Dogs Wiki

Bungou Stray Dogs has gained quite the popularity since the second season. I was hoping to see a third season but a spin off may be a nice change of pace. Long time fans of the show will be able to appreciate the show and it’s characters without having to worry about any painful backstory or character deaths so that a big sigh of relief! For new fans this will be a good introduction to the wonderful characters of Bungou Stray Dogs! Though I can’t guarantee that there are no spoilers from season 1 & 2, so watch out! If you’re interested in the show I would suggest watching the original first!

Bungou Stray Dogs Wan! will premiere on Jan 13th, 2021

Dr. Stone: Stone Wars

Dr. Stone: Stone Wars

  • Studios: TMS Entertainment
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Sci-Fi, Adventure, Shounen
  • Synopsis: The second season of Dr. Stone

At this point I’m sure everyone is already knows about the new Dr. Stone but I’ll touch on a few things that I’m looking forward to! I can’t wait to see what other inventions Senku will create this season with Chrome and friends as well as how they’ll deal with the Tsukasa army! The appeal of Dr. Stone is the scientific and logical mindset that Senku possesses and the creative and intriguing ways that the technology that we take for granted today can be replicated in a stone world! If you haven’t heard or seen Dr. Stone yet, then you must be sleeping underneath a rock! Give it a watch!

Dr. Stone: Stone Wars will premiere on Jan 14th, 2021

Gekidol

Gekidol

  • Studios: Hoods Entertainment
  • Source: Original
  • Genres: Music
  • Synopsis: “Set five years after the mysterious disaster of a city’s sudden disappearance, a group of girls fascinated by the “Theatrical Material System” using 3D holograms aims to brighten the stage during the city’s post-apocalyptic recovery.”
-MAL News

As I mentioned in Alice in Deadly School, Gekidol will occur in the same universe but much further in the future than Alice in Deadly School. There are hints of the two stories relationship as you can see in the visual that the sign read “Alice in Theater”, quite similar to the Alice in Deadly School no? I’ve seen my fair share of idol anime and even one that involved zombies, but it’ll be interesting to see how these idols grow in a post-apocalyptic world. To be completely honest, I have no idea what these stories have in store for us and it’s making me have really high expectations! Again this one will be a wild card!

Gekidol will premiere on Jan 5th, 2021

Yup, that’s right! There will be TWO Hataraku Saibou shows running in 2021! This is the sequel to the show that we all know and love with our beloved and disoriented red blood cell and the stoic yet friendly white blood cell! From the PV it looks like they’re in for some big problems! Imagine if they had COVID-19 enter the body…too soon? Either way, I’m very excited for this new season and if you haven’t seen Hataraku Saibou yet…what are you waiting for?! Do it!

Hataraku Saibou!! will premiere on Jan 9th, 2021

Horimiya

  • Studios: CloverWorks
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Romance, School, Shounen
  • Synopsis: “Although admired at school for her amiability and academic prowess, high school student Kyouko Hori has been hiding another side of her. With her parents often away from home due to work, Hori has to look after her younger brother and do the housework, leaving no chance to socialize away from school. Meanwhile, Izumi Miyamura is seen as a brooding, glasses-wearing otaku. However, in reality, he is a gentle person inept at studying. Furthermore, he has nine piercings hidden behind his long hair and a tattoo along his back and left shoulder. By sheer chance, Hori and Miyamura cross paths outside of school—neither looking as the other expects. These seemingly polar opposites become friends, sharing with each other a side they have never shown to anyone else.

-MAL Rewrite

I’ve been seeing a lot of excitement for Horimiya, I’m not an avid manga reader so I’m not familiar with the story but with CloverWorks handling the production and the interesting synopsis, you can count me in! This will looks to be a fun show that will have you laughing episode after episode! Other than that, I’m not sure what to talk about the show, if you’re a big fan of Horimiya let me know what makes you most excited about the show in the comments!

Horimiya will premiere on Jan 10th, 2021

Hortensia Saga (TV)

  • Studios: LIDENFILMS
  • Source: Game
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Magic, Fantasy
  • Synopsis: “Hortensia Saga is a medieval fantasy tale of war and chaos. Three years ago, the king was betrayed and murdered by one of his dukes who then rebuilt the kingdom into his own. But now, the original heir to the throne has secretly come of age. Hiding in the guise of a man, she and her loyal band begin the quest to save her homeland.”
-Kotaku (edited by Myanimelist)

This is one of the show where I know it’s not going to be good, but I want to take the chance and try watching it anyway. The PV shows a variety of pros and cons to the show, first of the artwork and animation were rough and choppy, the story is extremely cheesy and almost predictable, as well as the typical protagonist that could appear in any other fantasy story and still fit in. HOWEVER, there are some good points: the stellar voice cast featuring a number of big names like: Horie Yui, Hosoya Yoshimasa, and Koyasu Takehito as well as a killer soundtrack starting off with an opening song by MY FIRST STORY. I love it when good JRock bands get asked to write anime openings because 99% of the time it ends up being a huge hit! So I’m going in blind and hopefully the story develops more than I think it will!

Hortensia Saga will premiere on Jan 7th, 2021

Idoly Pride

Idoly Pride

  • Studios: Lerche
  • Source: Original
  • Genres: Music
  • Synopsis: “To become an idol, I shed blood, sweat, and tears. Even so, I push on. I want to shine. I want to earn it. I want to become number one. I want to smile. I want to make my dreams come true. I want to look back at a sea of people. I want to be noticed. I want to find it. I want to overcome obstacles. I have only pride inside my chest. No one is in the spotlight from the beginning. Everyone is weak. Only those who do not break will reach the highest peak to become an idol. This is the story of idols who face big dreams and harsh reality.”
-MAL Rewrite

Idoly Pride caught my attention with the stunning visuals and character designs and not so much with its story and characters. I’m really uncertain about this show as the preview doesn’t give a lot of context other than some dialogue from certain characters and broad plot points. Typically that appeal that I find in Idol anime are the bonds that are created within the story and how that translates into their performances. From the minimal context it seems like the story will focus more on the competition within the idol industry and how does one make their way of the ladder to being a successful idol. It’s a bit darker than I’m used to with the idol genre but I can’t say that I’m not interested. This one will also be a wild card for me.

Idoly Pride will premiere on Jan 10th, 2021

Log Horizon: Entaku Houkai

Log Horizon: Entaku Houkai

  • Studios: Studio Deen
  • Source: Light novel
  • Genres: Action, Game, Adventure, Magic, Fantasy
  • Synopsis: The third season of Log Horizon

Well this is title that I didn’t expect to see for this season! Log Horizon made huge waves when it first aired back in late 2013, which then resulted in a second season the following year but has since been silent. After a long awaited 6 years, Log Horizon is back with its third season and I’m excited to see what it has in store for us! Though I may need to go back and rewatch the first two season because I barely remember anything from the show lol.

Log Horizon: Entaku Houkai will premiere on Jan 13th, 2021

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu

  • Synopsis: “A 34-year-old virgin NEET who is kicked out of his house when he runs out of money. He’s regretting his life when he’s suddenly killed in a traffic accident, and he’s reborn in another world full of swords and sorcery. As a newborn baby, he resolves to live his life without regrets and make the best of his knowledge from his previous life. While developing his skills in magic, he meets a small girl who is a magic tutor, and a beautiful quarter-elf with green hair.”
-ANN

We can’t end the season without at least one new Isekai show now can we?! Already from the synopsis, I can imagine this show being a bit on the edgy side but I’m always open to giving new animation studios a chance and since this is Studio’s bind first show under their name, I couldn’t let it slip by! The PV gave us a taste of the what to expect from the show and it doesn’t look as edgy as the synopsis makes it out to be but I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out when it airs! I’m going to put this one in the wild card basket as well.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu will premiere on Jan 11th, 2021

  • Studios: Silver Link.
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Seinen
  • Synopsis: The third season of Non Non Biyori

Non Non Biyori is hands down of my favorite shows of ALL TIME. It follows grade schoolers who live in the countryside, it teaches the lesson of enjoying the simple things in life like enjoying a picnic, playing games that you make up, and making the most of the time with your best friends. Though at the moment I’m not sure how this season fits in with the Non Non Biyori timeline. Non Non Biyori is the starting point with the 2nd season Non Non Biyori Repeat filling in the gaps with in the first season. This season will either progress forward or do something similar to the 2nd season. Either way I’m super excited to see the gang again! Nyanpasu!

Non Non Biyori Nonstop will premiere on Jan 11th, 2021

Otona no Bouguya-san 2nd Season

Otona no Bouguya-san 2nd Season

The one anime short that I will be watching this season. Otona no Bouguya’s first season was an entertaining watch! As a fan of playing female characters in all types of games I can’t help but be intrigued with the different variety of female armor and this show just hits the right spot in both aesthetic and comedy!

Otona no Bouguya-san 2nd Season will premiere on Jan 2nd, 2021

  • Studios: GoHands

The story is set in the Akatsuki Special Zone, a lawless zone in Tokyo. “Helios” are those who use the ability of the tattoos to protect the city, “Artemis” are committed to maintain security and control, whilst having a strong commercial motive, and the “Public Security Special Service” are Scard Staff of the metropolitan police department. They live through the turbulent days to keep on going.”

-MAL News

Anyone remember the show, Hand Shakers? I, to this day, am still fascinated with the moves that were made on that show. It was ambitious and daring but didn’t quite get it right. From the same studio, Gohands, is another take on this articulate and dynamic art style as well as a brand new story. Project Scard: Praeter no Kizu looks much better than Hand Shakers and I’m really happy to see that this style still has the punch and flair that it had before. There’s an attention to detail, especially when considering perspectives and angles, when making a show like this and I applaud the studio for trying it again. I have high hopes that this will be make some waves throughout the anime community, if they get it right! The story is quite ambiguous right now, though I’d still be satisfied even if the story wasn’t great. I’m more curious about the art and animation!

Project Scard: Praeter no Kizu will premiere on Jan 9th, 2021

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season Part 2

Re:Zero fans are all rejoicing! With the way that the first part ended, there is a lot of anticipation for the conclusion of the show. To be honest, I was really confused throughout the first part. A lot of story elements were thrown around one after another with no real connection or a linear story elements to tie everything back together but this second part should have the pieces that we’re missing! I’m also really excited to see more of the witches as we only got a handful of screen time with each of them!

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season Part 2 will premiere on Jan 6th, 2021

Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season

Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season

  • Studios: MAPPA
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen
  • Synopsis: The fourth (and final) season of Shingeki no Kyojin

The anticipation for the final season is at an all time high because of how the previous season ended. Literally a whole new world was opened to us and it’s up to our favorite characters to conquer it and allow themselves to be truly free. That being said, there no telling what can happen! The PV gave a small glimpse but it’s all coming from left field that it’s hard to really make it all and that’s really all I can without any huge spoilers for newcomers! We’ve also switched animation studios to MAPPA, who at the same time will be handling Jujutsu Kaisen and I sincerely hope that they are able to handle the workload as both of these shows are action oriented and demand a high about of key animations and in betweens but I guess time will tell. Oh and (at the time of this post) the second episode for the final season is already out! Go catch up!

Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season premiered on December 7th, 2020

  • Synopsis: “Reki, a high school sophomore and skater, is addicted to “S,” a highly secret and dangerous downhill skateboarding race that takes place in an abandoned mine. The skaters are especially wild about the “beefs,” or heated battles that erupt in the races. Reki takes Langa, a transfer student returning to Japan after studying abroad, to the mine where the races are held. Langa, who has no skateboarding experience, finds himself pulled into the world of “S”…”
-Aniplex US

AN ANIME ABOUT SKATEBOARDING?! ANIMATED BY BONES?! SIGN ME UP! Being a huge fan of Bones and being interesting the sport of skateboarding, there’s no way I would pass up watching SK∞! Though I’m not that familiar with skateboard racing so this will be an interesting experience. The artstyle has a superpower shounen vibe to it (honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if suddenly the skaeboards have beasts in them like beyblades or something LOL) and the animation quality is top tier as you would expect from Bones. Being an original anime, there’s no telling where the story will take us but the unique setting alone has got me fired up! The soundtrack has a 90s hip hop aesthetic which I dig! And let’s not forget about the rockstar team we got here!

  • Director: Hiroko Utsumi (Free!, BANANA FISH)
  • Series Composition: Ichito Ohkouchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)
  • Character Design: Michinori Chiba (Basilisk, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans)
  • Music: Ryo Takahashi (ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Argonavis from BanG Dream!)

With a team like this, it’s hard to make something bad!

SK∞ will premiere on Jan 10th, 2021

Tenchi Souzou Design-bu

Tenchi Souzou Design-bu

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Fantasy, Seinen
  • Synopsis: “In Heaven’s Animal Design Department, designers create a variety of new animals daily while contending with the unreasonable requests of their client: God. This series answers questions such as, ‘Why can’t unicorns exist?’, ‘What makes an animal taste delicious?’, ‘What’s the most powerful creature in the ocean?’, and, ‘Bird versus snake: who would win?'”
-Kodansha Comics (edited by Myanimelist)

You ever wonder what animals are the way that they are? Why are otters so cute, why are snakes so long, and why does my cat looks like she wants to end the world? Well look no further, as Tenchi Souzou Design-bu will take you up to the heavens to see the whole design process! Jokes aside, this looks like a really fun show to get into without a lot of commitment, no painful character backstories, and ALL THE ANIMALS. The PV alone had me laughing about Koalas for 5 minutes straight and I can’t wait to see more!

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken 2nd Season

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken 2nd Season

Rimuru and friends are coming back with a new season! With the way the first season ended, there were a lot of question and even more anticipation for the start of season 2 and it’s coming soon! Lots things to look forward to in this season but my first question is why is everyone wearing a suit in the key visual? Will Tempest be evovling yet again? How is Veldora doing? Will Milim be coming back? What is that demon planning to do to Rimuru? I can’t contain my excitement at seeing all of the characters again!

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken 2nd Season will premiere on Jan 12th, 2021

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby 2nd Season

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2

  • Studios: P.A. Works (Unconfirmed)
  • Source: Game
  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Sports
  • Synopsis: The second season of Uma Musume: Pretty Derby

Uma Musume took me by the reins and really hooked me with it’s story back in 2018! Ever since I’ve been patiently waiting for the mobile game that was announced around the time of airing for the show with no avail. HOWEVER, 2021 IS THE YEAR. I’ll drop the trailer for the mobile game for my fellow MOBAGE lovers!

Aside from the announcement of the new MOBAGE there is of course this season anime season! From the PV it looks like the focus will shift away from Special Week and Silence Suzuka and more towards Toukai Teio and Mejiro McQueen as shown on the key visual. But don’t fret, SPICA will still have a good amount of screen time as well as other horsegirls!

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby 2nd Season will premiere on Jan 5th, 2021

Wonder Egg Priority

  • Studios: CloverWorks
  • Source: Original
  • Genres: Slice of Life
  • Synopsis: “The story begins when the protagonist, a 14-year-old girl named Ai Ooto, hears a mysterious voice while walking around town late at night. It gives her an egg and beckons to her: “If you wish to change the future, you need only choose to do so. Now, believe in yourself and smash the egg.”

-Anichart (edited by KiritoNarukami)

CloverWorks really taking it up a notch this year as they’re also releasing a brand new original anime! Wonder Egg Priority follows the innocent AI Ooto and the events that surround this mysterious egg. There isn’t a lot that we know about the story at the moment. The PV is quite abstract and it’s quite hard to find another synopsis aside from the one that’s translated directly from the website itself but knowing Cloverworks and their quality of work, there’s no doubt in my mind that this will be a beautiful story with an equally beautiful art and animation!

Wonder Egg Priority will premiere on Jan 13th, 2021

Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season

Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season

  • Studios: CloverWorks
  • Source: Manga
  • Genres: Sci-Fi, Mystery, Psychological, Thriller, Shounen
  • Synopsis: The second season of Yakusoku no Neverland

Exactly a year ago we were all sucked into the world of Yakusoku No Neverland and I, to this day, have yet to write the review for the first season because I’m still processing the event that happened within those first 12 episodes! And with the release of new key visual I’m even more concerned!? What is this small demon child? Just what is waiting for us beyond the orphanage?! I kept my hand of the manga so that I could appreciate the story to the fullest, but it’s killing me in more ways than one! You could say that it’s eating me on the inside (too soon?)! If you haven’t heard of this show and love the dark psychological thrillers…what are you waiting for! I highly recommend watching the first season with NO CONTEXT! Just go in blind, you’ll thank me later (or hate me lol).

Yakusoku no Neverland will premiere on Jan 8th, 2021

  • Synopsis: The second season of Yuru Camp

I thought that there wasn’t anything that could make this Winter 2021 line up any better until I got to the very bottom. That’s right, YURU CAMP IS BACK FOR ANOTHER SEASON. What wonderful timing as well! With all of this social distancing maybe it’s a good time to take some time for yourself and go camping and living life simply as nature intended! I’m ready for more camping tips, as I’m actually thinking of doing some camping on my own (i promise I’m going to do actual research to supplment lol).

Yuru Camp△ will premiere on Jan 7th, 2021

Whoa, I haven’t written that much in one post in a while! Well I hope you found something that interested you! As usual I’ll post the hyperlinks for the shows first impression as I post them!

Did you find something new to watch?

Are there any other shows that you’re watching?

Let me know in the comments!
